Perveen Tayabali’s latest novel Roxanne.
The novel has a special resonance for those familiar with the social life in Mumbai, particularly the Parsi community
‘At the dawn of the millennium, the Tarapore family living in Mumbai, find themselves in straitened circumstances. Roxanne, a teacher, is engaged to Dins and lives with her parents Hilla and Burjore, and younger sister Dilly. When Dins goes abroad to study for a year, Roxanne starts working as a tutor to Yasmin Marshall, daughter of divorcee Cyrus Marshall, and is unwillingly attracted to him.
Roxanne must balance the dynamics of her younger sister’s love interests, her mother’s involvement with a crooked cloth merchant, her long-distance engagement to Dins, her employer’s pursuit of her, and his girlfriend’s jealousy. Roxanne’s working life leads her into parts of society that she must carefully navigate to protect her family and her heart.’
Roxanne is a tight-knit and captivating story, dealing with emotions and dilemmas to which most readers can relate. The novel revolves around several families and generations: their friendships, ups and downs, laughter and tears, and falling in and out of love. It also examines the general unhappiness Parsi parents face when their children marry outside the community. The characters are realistic and convincing, including those with relatively small parts. The writing is clear and cogent, descriptions vivid, and captured in a perceptive and engaging manner.
